How to Start Azolla Farming – Low Budget, High Profit!
What is Azolla?
Azolla is a fast-growing aquatic fern rich in protein, widely used as animal feed for cows, goats, poultry, and fish. It also improves soil fertility and is used in organic farming.
Step-by-Step Guide to Start Azolla Farming:
1. Site Selection:
Choose a shady area with partial sunlight (under a tree or net).
Avoid direct sunlight and strong winds.
2. Materials Required:
A small space (100 sq. ft. is enough for beginners)
Silpaulin sheet (plastic pond liner) – around ₹500-700
Bricks/bamboo/wood for pond frame
Cow dung or farmyard manure – for nutrients
Azolla starter culture (you can get this from agriculture departments or online) – ₹200-500
3. Pond Preparation:
Dig a shallow pit (6 inches deep)
Place the silpaulin sheet inside
Add 10-15 kg of soil
Add cow dung mixed with water (1:1 ratio)
Fill with clean water (3–4 inches)
4. Adding Azolla:
Spread 0.5 to 1 kg of Azolla culture
It will multiply and cover the pond in 7–10 days
5. Daily Maintenance:
Remove excess Azolla daily
Change water partially every 10–15 days
Add fresh cow dung slurry weekly
Maintain temperature between 20°C–30°C for best growth
